The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in federal court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
