The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Revitalize Challenged Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Follows Poor Reception

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster unveiling last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had shown the need for a distinct game identity.

The president expressed that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to address community desires.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

The news mirrors a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the complete text from the president's announcement:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and innovative creators we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”

Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It uncovered the need for a clearer vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to consideration and overhauled the title with a refreshed direction - one that’s ready to deliver on its promise to our players.

The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable development you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the incoming Director of the team. Following several months of talks, Ben officially joins us on next week.

Ben’s leadership and experience in the PVP shooter space is vast, having dedicated the recent years creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in receiving Ben soon. We are all eager to keep observing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to come.

The President

Background of the New Head

The appointee currently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had periods at other industry leaders.

Title Details and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Face the opponents with unique powers, challenges, and obstacles that shift every round. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and pray your team can secure victory? The decision is up to you."

The game lacks an official launch window or platforms, but fans can anticipate further news as production continues.
