Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
